Ephesians 6:10-17
10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. 14 Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. 16 In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; 17 and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

The writer acts like a proper God-fearing general who preaches a sermon to his troops drawn up in battle array, admonishing them to stand firm and fight boldly and confidently. This writing therefore might well be called a battle-sermon for Christians. For he shows here that those who are baptized into Christ and would hold fast to him must be warriors, always equipped with their armor and weapons, and that the lot of a Christian is no leisurely existence, nor one of peace and security; instead the Christian is always on campaign, attacking and defending.
Therefore the writer here warns and musters the soldiers, saying, “You are in my army and under my flag; see to it that you are on the lookout for the enemy, ready to defend yourselves against his angels, for he is never far away from you.”
As long as you do that, you need have no fear. For we belong to a Lord who has angels himself and power enough, and is called the Lord of hosts and the true victor over the dragon. He stands by us and fights for us. For the Word of the Lord abides forever. It may suffer temptation, and the church may have no peace from the enemy, and some who let the Word be taken out of their heart may fall, but the Word must abide forever. —— Martin Luther (WA 49:583f)(Sermons from the year 1544)

Lord, keep us steadfast in your word;
curb those who by deceit or sword would wrest the kingdom from your Son
and bring to naught all he has done. Amen. ——Martin Luther
